Magical Long Exposure Photos of Fireflies in Japan

Photographer Yume Cyan manages to take some truly spectacular shots of fireflies in the forests of Nagoya City, Japan. The photographer’s beautiful long exposure photos capture their glowing bodies and translate them as floating yellow and green dots, dancing all around the woods like tiny spirits. There’s both a magical and romantic quality to the images that makes the viewer want to jump right in and frolic.

The Oldest Water on Earth Tastes Very Bad

Last month, some scientists collected water from deep inside the Earth that may have been isolated for more than 2 billion years!! That’s half the age of Earth.

So of course, being a scientist, Barbara Lollar (one of the paper’s authors) had to taste it. It was not delicious (and luckily non-toxic). Instead, it was so salty that it had the consistency of maple syrup.

Please sign this petition concerning police brutality and government corruption in Brazil. The mass media is not reporting on any of this, today on June 16th radio stations’ signals were cut and replaced with the narration of soccer games simply because they were reporting on police brutality who locked protesters inside a park with children and women inside, gassed them and shot rubber bullets.

The Brazilian media is being censured. Websites that express the true situation by people who have been victims of police brutality are being taken down. The government is refusing to acknowledge any of this, and their president has not even made a statement about the situation. The Brazilian media is reporting that the protesters are vandals and bandits.

What is it that Brazil is protesting for, you may ask?

• They want the end of rampant corruption that affects every single system in the country
• They want the end of police brutality
• They want better conditions in public transportation, public hospitals and schools
• They want the government to listen to its people, and not repress peaceful manifestations of democracy
• They want justice for those who were hurt by police brutality in what started as a peaceful manifestation against the raising of the prices of what may be one of the worst public transportation systems in the world
• They want some of the funds that have been used for the World Cup (including the building of the most expensive arena ever to host a world cup - costing 1.2 billion) to be used for necessary things such as fighting hunger and poverty
• They want their media not to be censured and to expose the reality of the country

Does that sound absurd to you?

They need the world to listen, and the internet is their only way. We need to speak up and pressure the Brazilian government into action.

I believe that as human beings, we are all brothers and sisters and when we see our fellow brother or sister in distress we need to come to their aid. Help Brazilians obtain their basic human rights! 102-Year-Old Abandoned Ship is a Floating Forest / Image by Andy Brill

The SS Ayrfield is one of many decommissioned ships in the Homebush Bay, just west of Sydney, but what separates it from the other stranded vessels is the incredible foliage that adorns the rusted hull. The beautiful spectacle, also referred to as The Floating Forest, adds a bit of life to the area, which happens to be a sort of ship graveyard.

Monsanto Found Guilty of Chemical Poisoning in Landmark Case

A French farmer who can no longer perform his routine farming duties because of permanent pesticide injuries has had his day in court, literally, and the perpetrator of his injuries found guilty of chemical poisoning. The French court in Lyon ruled that Monsanto’s Lasso weedkiller formula, which contains the active ingredient alachlor, caused Paul Francois to develop lifelong neurological damage that manifests as persistent memory loss, headaches, and stuttering during speech.

Reports indicate that the 47-year-old farmer sued Monsanto back in 2004 after inhaling the Lasso product while cleaning his sprayer tank equipment. Not long after, Francois began experiencing lasting symptoms that prevented him from working, which he says were directly linked to exposure to the chemical. Since Lasso’s packaging did not bear adequate warnings about the dangers of exposure, Francois alleged at the time that Monsanto was essentially negligent in providing adequate protection for its customers.

To the surprise of many, the French court agreed with the claims and evidence presented before it, declaring earlier this year that “Monsanto is responsible for Paul Francois’ suffering after he inhaled the Lasso product … and must entirely compensate him.” The court is said to be seeking expert opinion on how to gauge Francois’ losses in order to determine precisely how much Monsanto will be required to compensate him in the case.

“It is a historic decision in so far as it is the first time that a (pesticide) maker is found guilty of such a poisoning,” said Francois Lafforgue, Paul Francois’ lawyer, to Reuters earlier in the year.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), exposure to alachlor can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, spleen, and eyes, and may lead to the development of anemia and even cancer. The EPA apparently views alachlor as so dangerous, in fact, that the agency has set the maximum contaminant level goals (MCLG) for alachlor to zero in order to “prevent potential health problems.” (http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/basicinformation/alachlor.cfm)

In 2007, France officially banned Lasso from use in the country in accordance with a European Union (EU) directive enacted in 2006 prohibiting the chemical from further use on crops in any member countries. But despite all the evidence proving that alachlor can disrupt hormonal balance, induce reproductive or developmental problems, and cause cancer, the chemical is still being used on conventional crops throughout the U.S. to this very day.
